How to Fix an Electric Furnace When It Stops Blowing Heat

Your house is cold. The thermostat says it is warm. The air coming out of the vents feels like a refrigerator. You might be staring at a white box that sounds like a paper bag full of pennies shaken by a giant. Before you call a pro and hand over a hefty service fee, there are things you can check. Most electric furnaces fail for simple reasons. A tripped breaker. A dirty filter. A blown fuse. You can fix these yourself.

Start by turning off the power. This is not optional. Electric furnaces carry enough juice to stop your heart. Flip the switch on the unit or the breaker in your main panel. Pull the plug if it has one. Now you can look inside safely.

Check the Breaker and Power Source

Go to your electrical panel. Look for the breaker labeled “furnace” or “hvac.” Is it in the middle or flipped to the “off” position? Flip it firmly to “off” and then back to “on.” If it trips again immediately, stop. You have a short circuit. Do not keep resetting it. Call an electrician.

If the breaker stays put, check the emergency shutoff switch. It is usually a red toggle switch located on or near the furnace, often on the wall or on the unit itself. Did you bump it while cleaning? Is it flipped down? Flip it up. You should hear a click.

Inspect the Air Filter

A clogged filter is the number one killer of furnace efficiency. It restricts airflow. The blower motor works harder. It overheats. The safety switch trips. If the air is not moving, the heat is not moving.

Pull out the filter. Hold it up to a light. If you cannot see through it, replace it. Use a new filter of the exact same size and MERV rating. A tight seal matters. If air leaks around the edges, it bypasses the filter and dirt enters the blower.

Examine the Limit Switch and High-Limit Thermostat

Inside the furnace, there is a small switch called the high-limit thermostat. It monitors the heat exchanger temperature. If the air flow is bad, the heat builds up. This switch trips to prevent the metal from cracking or the house from burning down. It looks like a small plastic bulb with two wires attached to a metal fin inside the air stream.

If the limit switch is tripped, it will not reset on its own if it is overheating. But if the filter was dirty and you replaced it, the switch might reset after it cools down. Wait an hour. Turn the power back on. See if the blower starts. If it still does not work, you might need a multimeter to test for continuity. If the switch is open when it should be closed, it is faulty. Replace it.

Look at the Heating Elements

Electric furnaces use large metal coils or rods to generate heat. These are called heating elements. They can burn out over time. They look like toaster coils inside the unit.

You need a multimeter for this step. Set it to the ohms setting. Touch the probes to the terminals of the heating element. If you get a reading of infinity or “OL,” the element is broken. It needs replacement. Be careful. These
