The legs are the foundation. Measure and mark two 2 × 6 boards to 28 1/2 inches. Use your carpenters’ square to ensure the cuts are straight. Cut them.
Next, measure and mark four 2 × 4 boards to 36 inches. Cut those too.
Do it again. You need a second set of two 2 × 6s and four 2 × 4s for the other end of the table.
Now, assemble the first leg unit. Lay two 2 × 4s flat on your work surface. Space them about 15 inches apart.
Place two 2 × 6s on top of these cross pieces. Align them to lie flush with the ends of the 2 × 4s. This forms a square-topped A-shape.
Add two more 2 × 4s across the top. Position them exactly over the first pair. You are sandwiching the legs between two sets of braces.
Check the angles. Use the carpenters’ square to square up the assembly. Clamp it down tight with C-clamps.
Drill through the joints. Make a diagonal pair of 3/8-inch holes through all three boards at each joint.
Slide a 3/8 × 5 1/2-inch carriage bolt through each hole. Add a washer and a locknut. Tighten it with your adjustable wrench.
Remove the clamps.
Build the second leg assembly the same way. Critical point: the bottom cross braces must be at the exact same height as the first set. If they aren’t, the table will wobble.
Attaching the Stretcher
Now connect the two leg assemblies. You need a 2 × 6 stretcher.
Cut it to 68 inches long.
Mark the centerline of the board’s width at each end.
On each leg assembly, mark the center point of the outside bottom 2 × 4 cross piece.
Prop one leg assembly upright.
Place one end of the 2 × 6 stretcher over the lower cross pieces. Align the marks. The end of the 2 × 6 should be flush with the outside face of the cross piece.
Clamp it firmly.
Drill two 3/8-inch holes through the stretcher and through each of the two cross pieces. That’s four holes per end.
Insert a 3/8 × 5 1/2-inch carriage bolt through each hole.
Add a washer and locknut to each bolt. Tighten everything down with the wrench.
Remove the clamps.
Position the second leg assembly at the opposite end. Attach the stretcher to the bottom cross pieces exactly as you did the first side.
Once both ends are secure, you have a rigid frame.
Square up the leg assemblies. You need them aligned properly so the structure doesn’t wobble once you’re done. Nail a scrap board across each side to keep everything in position temporarily. Use 10-penny common nails. Drive them close to the top of the leg assemblies. Leave the nails sticking out a bit. You’ll need to pull them out later, so don’t sink them flush.
Assembling the Picnic Table Top
Cut seven pieces of 2 × 6 lumber to 72 inches long. These are your table planks. Set them across the leg assemblies. They should overhang the legs by 2 inches at each end. Ensure the ends of all boards are exactly flush.
Mark the centerlines of the two top cross pieces on each board. These marks tell you where to drill. Remove the 2 × 6s for individual attachment. This makes drilling easier and more accurate than trying to drill through a heavy assembly.
Place the first board back on the legs. Overhang the legs about 2 inches at each end. Extend the long edge about 1/2 inch past the outside of the leg assembly. Clamp it firmly. Accuracy here sets the tone for the whole table.
Drill two 7/64-inch holes through the plank into the cross pieces below. Do this at each marked line. Drill to a depth of about 2 1/2 inches. Wrap masking tape around your drill bit to mark the depth. It’s a cheap trick that saves you from drilling too deep or too shallow.
Change to a 7/32-inch bit. Redrill the holes to a depth of 1 1/2 inches. This countersink allows the screw head to sit flush. Each end of the plank needs four holes. Two through each cross piece. Drive a 5 1/2-inch #12 × 3 flathead brass wood screw into each hole. Brass resists rust, which matters for outdoor furniture. Set the screws until heads are just flush with the surface.
Repeat for the remaining six planks. Adjust for uniform spacing. Keep the ends flush. The last board should overhang the leg assembly about 1/2 inch. Drill and screw them down successively.
Finishing the Table
Use a block plane to bevel exposed corners slightly. It reduces snagging. Run a belt sander over all exposed edges. Start with coarse grit, move to medium, then fine. Round the edges slightly. It’s easier on bare skin in summer.
Retighten all bolts. Vibration from assembly can loosen things. Sand off rough spots. You can use the belt sander or a hand block. Leave the table unfinished. Let it weather naturally. Oil or stain adds maintenance; untreated cedar or redwood holds up on its own.
Building the Benches
Measure and cut four pieces of 2 × 4 to 17 1/2 inches. These are your bench legs. Cut eight pieces of 2 × 4 to 10 1/2 inches for cross braces. Check your cuts with a carpenter’s square. Even cuts mean a stable bench.

Cut a 2 × 4 to 48 inches for the bench stretcher. Mark the center of the board’s width at each end. Mark the center point of the outside bottom cross piece on each leg assembly. Prop the stretcher flat across the lower cross pieces. Ends should be flush with the outside faces of the cross pieces. Clamp it in place.
Drill two 1/4-inch holes through the stretcher and each of the two cross pieces at each end. That’s four holes per end. Bolt the stretcher with 1/4 × 5 1/2-inch carriage bolts, washers, and locknuts. Tighten with a wrench. Remove clamps.
Square and align the leg assemblies again. Nail a scrap piece of wood between them if needed to hold position. Cut two 2 × 6s to 72 inches. Set them across the leg assemblies. Maintain a 1/2-inch gap between the two boards. Clamp them down.
At each end of each 2 × 6, drill four 7/64-inch holes. Drill through the plank and down into the upper cross pieces. Depth should be about 3 inches. Redrill with a 7/32-inch bit to a depth of 1 1/2 inches. Drive 5 1/2-inch #12 × 3 flathead brass wood screws into each hole. Set heads flush.
Bevel exposed edges slightly with a block plane if you want. Round edges with a belt sander using successively finer grits. Or sand by hand. Leave the benches unfinished.

Drill a diagonal pair of 3/8-inch holes through each joint. Go all the way through the braces and the leg. Use the power drill with the extension. Insert a 3/8 × 7-inch carriage bolt through each hole. Outside to in. Thread a washer and a locknut onto each bolt. Tighten with an adjustable wrench. Remove the clamps.
Turn the assembly upside down. Repeat the process. Fasten a second set of cross braces at the top of the legs. These braces slant inward from the top toward the center of each leg. Assemble the second pair of legs the same way.
Adding the Longitudinal Stretcher
Measure, mark, and cut a 2 × 4 for the main stretcher. It needs to be 47 inches long. Drill a diagonal pair of 3/8-inch holes in each end. Center them 3/4 inch back from the end and 1 inch in from the sides.
Set the leg assemblies opposite one another. Position them to support the bench top. Lay the stretcher across the bottom leg braces. Center it between the legs. The ends should rest on the inside bottom leg braces.

Installing the Bench Top
Measure and cut seven 2 × 4s to exactly 6 feet long. Mark each board 6 inches in from both ends. These marks will guide your alignment later.
Set one 2 × 4 on edge across the two leg assemblies. Align its outside face flush with the top corner of the brace’s slanted edge on each end. Adjust the length so each end extends exactly 6 inches past the leg assemblies. Use your marks to verify the position.
Nail this 2 × 4 to the leg assemblies using four 6-penny brass or galvanized finishing nails. This secures it to the cross braces. Toenail the 2 × 4 to the brace by driving two nails on one side and then two on the other. Keep the board firm while you nail to ensure the long edge stays flush with the cross brace ends.
Set the nail heads below the surface with a nail set.
Position the remaining six 2 × 4s across the top braces. Set them on edge. Line up the long outside face of the last board with the top corners of the braces. Adjust for even spacing. Aim for about 1 inch of gap between boards. Nail each board into place as you go. Set the heads. Work across the frame to secure all seven 2 × 4s firmly to the bench structure.
Capping the Bench Ends
Cap the ends to complete the top. Measure the exact distance across the bench top ends. Cut two 2 × 4 pieces to match. Use a carpenter’s square to ensure straight cuts. Place one cap piece flat against the cut boards at one end. Keep all surfaces flush. Drive two 16-penny brass or galvanized finishing nails through the face of the cap. Nail into the end of each bench-top 2 × 4. Set the heads. Repeat for the other end.
Smoothing and Finishing

Build the Table Base
Grab your 2 × 4s. You need two pieces cut to exactly 42 ½ inches. Those are your base supports.
Drill holes. Two in each end of every piece. Use an 11/64-inch bit. Get the spacing right—3/8 inch in from the very end and 1 inch from the edges. Precision here keeps the legs from wobbling later.
Flip the table upside down. It’s easier to work with gravity than against it. Lay those base pieces across the legs. Align the joints carefully. Secure them with two 2 ½-inch #8 flathead brass wood screws. Drive them through those holes at each joint. Brass doesn’t rust. It holds better over time.
Construct the Stretcher Assembly
Now the stretcher. Cut one 42 ½-inch piece. Cut one 35 ½-inch piece. Both 2 × 4s.
Find the centerpoint on each. Draw a line across the face at the halfway mark. Then find the middle of that line.
You’re going to bore a 1 5/8-inch hole. Use an electric drill with a hole saw attachment. Do this on the 42 ½-inch piece. Center it on that midpoint. Drill until the bit just punches through to the back side.
Stop. Turn the 2 × 4 over. Finish the hole from the opposite side. This prevents the wood from splintering out on the exit side. Clean look.
The 35 ½-inch piece is different. Drill the same 1 5/8-inch hole but only to a depth of about 1 1/8 inches. Do not go all the way through. It’s a blind hole. Break any splinters out with a small wood chisel. Keep the surface smooth.
Join the Stretcher Pieces
Back to the 42 ½-inch piece. Drill a series of 11/64-inch holes as shown in the diagram. These are for fastening.
Set the 42 ½-inch piece on top of the 35 ½-inch piece. Line up the long edges. Flush is key. Align those large center holes perfectly.
Fasten them together. Use 2 ½-inch #8 flathead brass wood screws. Drive them through the series of 11/64-inch holes. Tighten them down. The stretcher assembly is now one rigid unit.
This structure takes the weight. It keeps the legs from spreading. It looks clean. Brass screws don’t stand out. They sink in flush. You won’t see them once the table is right side up.
But wait. The holes in the stretcher need to match the leg positions. Check the spacing again. Measure twice. Cut once. If the legs don’t line up with those 11/64-inch holes, the whole base wobbles.
Chisel out any rough edges. Sand if you have to. Smooth wood takes screws better.
Assembling the Base and Center Support
Turn the table upright. Find the midpoint of the base pieces—halfway between the legs. Place the stretcher assembly between them, centered on your marks. The shorter piece slots right between the base pieces. Secure it with two 2½-inch #8 flathead brass wood screws. Drive them through the drilled holes at each end.
Building the Centerboard
Mark the centerline of the table frame. Measure 22 inches in from each end of a side piece to mark opposite sides. Cut a 46 1/4-inch piece of 1 × 4 redwood. This is your center board.
Find its centerpoint. Bore a 1 5/8-inch hole completely through it. This hole aligns with the center point. At each end, drill two 11/64-inch holes. Place them 1 1/4 inches back from the end and 1 inch in from the sides.
Position the board at the center of the tabletop frame. Center it on your marks. It should overhang the frame by 1 1/8 inches on each end. Secure the board to the frame. Use two 1 1/4-inch #8 flathead brass wood screws at each end. Drive them through the drilled holes into the frame edges.
Laying the Tabletop Boards
Cut 12 more 46 1/4-inch pieces of 1 × 4 redwood. You have ten inside boards and two outside pieces for each side.
For the ten inside boards, drill two holes in each end, just like before. The two outside boards need different spacing. Drill screw holes on the inside edge, but space them toward the outside edge. Place them 1 1/2 inches in and 2 1/4 inches back from the ends.
Start at the center board. Set each interior 1 × 4 into position successively. Align with the center board. Space them 1/16 inch apart. Secure each board with 1 1/4-inch #8 flathead brass wood screws. Drive them through the drilled holes.
Finish the top with the two specially drilled outside pieces. Lay them with their odd holes facing outward. The 1/16-inch spacing assumes a uniform board width of 3 1/2 inches. If your boards vary in width, reposition them to keep spacing even across the tabletop.
Finishing the Surface
Round the upper edges and corners of all tabletop boards. Smooth cut ends and rough spots. Use a fine-toothed flat file and sandpaper.
Apply redwood oil or stain. It helps preserve the color.
Using Your New Patio Table
Slide your patio umbrella shaft down through the hole in the center of the tabletop. It goes into the hole in the stretcher assembly.
